In the past week the South Bend Police Department has been receiving a larger number of complaints and questions, from area citizens, regarding suspicious unsolicited phone calls.
In all of the complaints the caller tells the recipient that they are calling in attempt to clear their bank account, or other financial or personal, information off Internet web sites. The caller warns the recipients of the dangers of having their personal and financial information on the Internet; and then asks them to verify information such as date of birth, social security numbers, checking account numbers and credit card account numbers. The caller does not supply this information – the caller wants the recipient to tell them the information that they want verified.
The South Bend Police Department urges anyone that receives such a call to immediately hang up and not engage in any conversation with these people. If a phone number is captured on your caller ID or if you have given out any personal / financial information then you are asked to file a police report by calling your local police department. If you have received such a call and no information was given then no police report is needed; but you are asked to please pass this information on to friends, family and associates to help them better arm themselves against Identity Theft culprits.
NO PERSONAL INFORMATION, BANKING INFORMATION AND/OR ACCOUNT INFORMATION SHOULD EVER BE GIVEN OUT OVER THE PHONE WHEN YOU DID NOT MAKE THE CALL YOURSELF!
Any follow up questions or information can be addressed to D/Sgt. Dominic W. Zultanski (574)235-7501.
