Training and Recruiting
The
Training and Recruiting Bureau has three major areas of responsibility: The recruitment,
screening and hiring of new police officers, the in-service training for 261 certified
police officers, and providing quality training seminars for area law enforcement
through our South Bend Regional Police Academy.

SURVIVING GROUND ASSAULTS Date: November 8, 2007 8:00am.—4:00pm.
This
course will show the student methods used by skilled fighters to disarm law enforcement
officers. It will show the student what fighters will do to the officer to gain
the upper hand. The officer will learn methods to protect him or herself while
in a ground fight. Officers will also learn choking techniques, arm and leg isolation
and what to look for in the aggressor’s actions before the attack. The training
techniques used come from the Brazilian, Jiu-Jitsu ultimate fighting techniques.
Training Attire: Athletic Students should wear comfortable clothing or
B.D.U.’s. officer’s should bring duty belts and batons.

FIREARMS
TRAINING SIMULATOR (F.A.T.S) Date: November 28, 29, 2007 10:00am. – 6:00pm.
Scheduling
Information: Departments will receive a training sign up sheet approximately three
to four weeks in advance. Once you have registered, we will contact you with the
times your department members should arrive at the training facility. Each officer
will be trained individually allowing for 30 minutes of training per officer.
The F.A.T.S Instructors will evaluate officers on their response to the
scenario presented, their tactical knowledge, the rationale employed, and their
decision if deadly force should be used, and the accuracy of any shots fired.
The primary purpose of the F.A.T.S training is to enhance officer safety
and tactical techniques and to re-enforce the use of less than lethal force when
appropriate. Officer’s reaction time and accuracy when deadly force is employed
should also improve with this training.

Instructors
METHAMPHETAMINE
LABORATORY TRAINING (Updated
Presentation for 2007) Date: December 5, 2007 8:00am—12:00pm.
This
course is designed to give officers a basic understanding of methamphetamine laboratory
practices. Topics include methamphetamine production through the Birch Reduction
Method as well as through the Red Phosphorus Method. The class participants will
learn street level skills that will enable them to identify clandestine laboratories
and the associated precursors. Students will also be familiarized with the practices,
policies and procedures of the Indiana State Police Clandestine Laboratory Team.
Liability issues and OSHA regulations regarding hazardous worksites and lab cleanups
will also be discussed.
Training Attire: Business Casual Dress uniform,
dress or casual dress slacks (Docker’s Style, Khaki’s), suit, sport coat, tie,
collared shirt, polo type shirt or sweater. Female officers may wear skirts or
dresses in lieu of slacks. No sandals, flip flops or athletic type (tennis shoes).
Any type of shoes appropriate for uniform wear is acceptable. No hats, scarves,
bandanas, or other types of items on the head. If a uniform is worn then the appropriate
hat can be worn.

of the Clandestine Lab Team since 2001. |
