Crime Prevention Unit

The South Bend Police Department takes its role in keeping the community safe very seriously. Our Crime Prevention Unit exists to provide citizens more information, tools and resources that you need to be informed and to assist you in doing your part to help protect the community and yourself from becoming a victim.

    Crime Prevention Tips

    We have also gathered together a variety of useful tips and techniques that have proven successful in preventing crime.

    The volume and scope of published literature available on this subject is almost inexhaustible. We have accumulated links to the most well-organized and useful collections of crime prevention literature and tools for your convenience.

    If you have a special crime prevention-related question or concern you can contact our Crime Prevention Unit for assistance. These specially trained personnel can perform security assessments of your residence if you are a senior citizen, or of your business. They

    The Crime Prevention Unit is also available to address your community group, school assembly or social event on the topic of crime prevention.

    Remember, that crime prevention begins in the mind. Recognizing that you are vulnerable and then taking affirmative steps to reduce that vulnerability through lifestyle changes and common-sense property safeguards is your best defense against becoming a victim of crime.

    Helpful tips

    Keep your valuables in your vehicle locked, or out of sight. It sounds obvious, but keeping items like phones, iPods, or GPS units visible provides temptation for an easy 'smash and grab'. Keep yourself from becoming a victim!
